A Small Help, A Big Relief
My weekday mornings usually begin with a walk around the society. Weekends, of course, are a different story—those are reserved for a little extra sleep and a lot less motivation!
On my walks, I come across familiar faces and plenty of unfamiliar ones. Most mornings, we simply cross paths without exchanging more than a polite smile.
But one morning, I noticed a house help standing near the entrance of a building. Something about her expression caught my attention. She looked confused, worried, and almost helpless.
As I walked past, she turned towards me and started explaining her problem.
She was trying to make a phone call but couldn't get it to connect. She had recharged her phone just the previous day, so she couldn't understand what was wrong.
I stopped to see if I could help.
It was a basic phone with a traditional numerical keypad. And there was another little challenge—the phone's language was set to Hindi.
Hindi may be our mother tongue, but navigating technology when every menu and setting is written in Hindi can sometimes be surprisingly difficult!
I started going through the settings, trying to figure out what could be preventing the call. Then I spotted it—a tiny little icon(plane mode) that was switched on.
I turned it off and handed the phone back to her.
"Ab ek baar try karke dekho."
She dialled the number.
This time, the phone on the other end started ringing.
The change in her face was instant.
The worry disappeared, replaced by a smile of pure relief. Something that had seemed like a big problem to her had taken only a few minutes to fix.
And yet, those few minutes mattered.
It reminded me that kindness doesn't always have to be grand. Sometimes, it is simply noticing that someone needs help and choosing to stop.
We are all busy. We are all rushing somewhere.
But perhaps, every once in a while, it's worth slowing down.
Because what may take only a few minutes of our time could mean a lot more to someone else.
Sometimes, a small help can bring a big relief.
